Filing a Consumer Complaint

The Attorney General’s Office accepts complaints from citizens on a large variety of consumer matters, such as insurance, cars, health care, banking, credit, utilities, debt collection, mortgages, charities, scams, and many more.  If you have experienced a consumer problem, we want to hear from you!  Reports from citizens serve two purposes:

First, if you are having trouble resolving a problem on your own with a particular business, we may be able to assist you.  When you file a consumer report with our office, we will contact the business on your behalf if we think we may be able to assist you in getting the problem resolved.  We call this process “mediation.”  When we receive your complaint, we will review it and determine what assistance we may be able to provide to you.  In some cases, we may also assist you in locating other government agencies that can best address the problem.

Second, reports from citizens help us to identify potential violations of Minnesota law and new problems occurring in the marketplace.  In some cases, reports from citizens may help us build lawsuits against companies that we determine have violated our state’s laws.  In other cases, your reports may help us educate the public about emerging scams or problem areas.

If you have questions about whether you should send us a report about a particular business or would like our assistance in filling out our Consumer Report Form, please call our Telephone Hotline at (651) 296-3353 or 1-800-657-3787 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

You may file a Consumer Report Form by downloading a copy of the form and mailing it to our office at the following address:
