Attorney General Ellison wins preliminary injunction blocking Trump Administration from imposing voting restrictions
June 16, 2025 (SAINT PAUL) — Attorney General Ellison issued the following statement after a court blocked the Trump Administration from both requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and banning counting valid mail-in ballots that arrive after elections. The preliminary injunction came in response to an April 3 lawsuit filed by Attorney General Ellison and 18 other attorneys general challenging an antidemocratic and un-American executive order attempting to impose sweeping voting restrictions across the country.
“I am pleased a court has recognized that President Trump does not have the authority to dictate how Minnesota runs our elections,” said Attorney General Ellison. “Minnesotans take great pride in the fact that our voting process is already free, fair, secure, and accessible. The last thing we need is a President who tried to unlawfully overturn a free and fair election to meddle with democracy in Minnesota. Our freedom to vote is sacred, and I will always defend it.”
