Job Summary

The Office of Attorney General Keith Ellison has a clear mission: we help Minnesotans afford their lives and live with dignity, safety, and respect.  We are a dynamic group of dedicated professionals who choose public service as a calling, and we are actively and intentionally committed to supporting an internal culture that affirms that calling. The Office is one of Minnesota’s largest public law offices and as of 2025, has been recognized as a Star Tribune Top Workplace Minnesota for five years in a row and Top Workplace USA for four years in a row.

The Attorney General’s Office seeks an experienced attorney to join its Employment, Torts, and Public Utilities Division. The attorney’s primary responsibility will be providing legal counsel and representation to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (“MPUC”). This position presents a unique opportunity to provide direct legal counsel to the MPUC and regularly engage in meaningful appellate work.

One of the roles of the Employment, Torts, and Public Utilities Division is to provide legal counsel to the MPUC. This includes providing legal advice to the MPUC at its regularly scheduled agenda meetings regarding utility, energy, and telecom matters, as well as handling appeals arising out of the MPUC’s decisions. For appeals, the attorney will be responsible for briefing and arguing their cases in front of Minnesota’s appellate courts. The attorney will also defend claims against the MPUC in state and federal court. Although rare for this position, cases can be venued anywhere in the state, so periodic travel throughout Minnesota may be required

This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment (combination of in-office work and telework).
